Capital Field Archers (CFA) is a family oriented field archery club serving the ACT and surrounding region. The club is affiliated with the Australian Bowhunters Association (ABA) and caters for all ages, levels of expertise and choice of shooting style. All types of archery equipment are welcome – from traditional longbow, to recurve and modern compound bows. We also have a range of club recurve bows and arrows for hire.
CFA is a field archery club, which means our targets are scattered around a natural, meandering bush setting emulating a traditional hunting scenario. Its a bit like hiking with arrows so bring your walking boots. We are located on a nature corridor in the middle of a pine forest about 5 minutes south of Tharwa, providing picturesque views overlooking natural bushland and some of the ACT’s surrounding hills and valleys.
CFA currently has two established ranges, each with twenty targets. Depending on the day the ranges may be set up for 3D (life-like rubber animals), ABA (vinyl animal targets) or a mix of both. Field targets come in different sizes and are shot over varying distances up to 48 metres for adults. Juniors and new starters are encouraged to shoot at shorter distances until they become more proficient. As well as requiring the archer to estimate the distance, field archery also requires shooting up or down hills, between tree branches, across gullies and dams to add to the challenge.
We endeavour to hold two club shoots a month. Once a year each our club hosts a Branch Shoot where other NSW clubs come and camp and compete over the weekend. Club facilities include camping areas, shaded seating, toilets, and showers. We also have a 50 meter practice range where we can fine-tune our equipment.
Safety is always a priority and there are a few basic rules and conditions that we require all participants to respect and comply with. It can be as competitive as you desire if you want to improve your score or grade but most simply enjoy the social aspect and the chance to enjoy the sport of field archery with like-minded companions.
CFA priorities are to grow our club membership and further improve our facilities – so turn off Netflix, go call all your friends and come and try field archery!
